The Felix Project, London’s largest food redistribution charity, tackles the UK’s dual challenges of food waste and hunger. In 2024, it redistributed the equivalent of 38 million meals, collecting surplus food from manufacturers and retailers to support community organisations. Seeking to understand the impact of its food redistribution, The Felix Project commissioned Bremner & Co to conduct an impact evaluation. The aim was to understand what their support enables the community organisations to do differently, whether it makes them more financially resilient, or even if it increases their reach and service provision. Identifying any negative or unforeseen consequences was an explicit consideration within the brief.
Our Approach
We reviewed documents provided by The Felix Project, then conducted desk research to understand the current policy and evidence landscape around food waste and food redistribution charities in the UK. We spoke to members of staff at The Felix Project to inform the approach to interviewing community organisations, as well as giving us a better understanding of wider organisational context. The main component of the research involved interviews with 20 beneficiary organisations, selected to represent the different categories of organisation The Felix Project supports. Based on the research, we identified themes and trends, and delivered recommendations for how The Felix Project could maximise the impact it has through the provision of food.
Key Outcomes
The final report was used to inform fundraising by demonstrating the efficacy that is crucial for funders of The Felix Project. Furthermore, having an informed but impartial evaluation partner gave the organisation confidence in its impact. Our work also guided service delivery planning, by indicating where the organisation can have the most beneficial impact, and what infrastructure is needed to deliver that impact most effectively.
Testimonials
As poverty in the UK continues to grow, and the cost of food continues to rise, demand for redistributed food has risen exponentially in recent years. For organisations like The Felix Project, it’s essential that they understand how to maximise the value of the food they provide. Talking to the community organisations that receive food from The Felix Project showed just how important this work is and helped to ensure it continues to meet their needs.
Rob Kidd, Lead Consultant, Bremner & Co
Working with Rob and the team from Bremner has given us a real insight into the impact our food redistribution has on the community organisations we serve. They effectively summarised findings from a range of different stakeholders and made clear recommendations as to how we can increase this impact in future. Rob and the team were highly professional throughout and adapted very well to the logistical challenges of organising 20 interviews with extremely busy grassroots organisations.
