Southwark Council School Food Training Programme

The brief

Southwark Council asked us to design and produce an innovative school food management training programme for all school business managers (SBMs) in the borough. We took a co-design approach, empowering and enabling 12 Southwark SBMs to identify the knowledge and competencies needed to confidently deliver great school food. Importantly, we ensured the training was embedded in accredited continual professional development (CPD).

The long term aim of this project is to ensure pupils enjoy nutritious, healthy school food supported by a whole school approach

The results

The Southwark SBM School Food Management Training Programme is a groundbreaking online modular learning course. It’s currently being rolled out across all 100 Southwark schools. Other Local Authorities now want to adopt similar training approaches, recognising the benefits of a holistic, co-designed, CPD-accredited training approach.

“The Bremner team took a professional and caring approach when co-designing the course with 12 school business managers (SBMs).  They made sure that the course met our brief as well as supporting SBM’s own continual professional development, which required a degree of flexibility as the curriculum content and delivery format was considered. The team actively listened, constructively challenged and responded to feedback from council officers and the design team to end up with an excellent holistic package of training, guidance and support for all primary schools and nursery settings.”
Gillian Boundy, Policy Officer for School Food, Southwark Council.
